Verbicky’s Eastern European roots contribute to an underlying raw primitivism to his statements on both the artificial and transitory nature of contemporary urban life. Using infinite expanses of layered color, texture, and subtle symbolism, Verbicky taps the divine imagination to create a universal appreciation for his work.  Verbicky’s work is unrestrained and evocative, drawing the audience into the thoughts and emotions of the artist himself at the time of creation. Largely a dedicated self-taught painter, Verbicky’s work is about the spontaneity and process inherent in creativity and in daily life.

James Verbicky, 31, splits his time between Los Angeles and, Canada, where his family emigrated to from Poland.

*Lisa Bengtsson

based in stockholm, designer lisa bengtsson has just launched a collection of wallpaper called ‘the family’. a recent graduate of the berghs school of communication in sweden, lisa was inspired by memories and nostalgia when she created her latest series of wallpaper. ‘the family’ reproduces images of frames to fill the wall with a blank canvas you can use to display your own photos. i prefer its blank state but i love the way they’ve framed knobs to hang jewelry in the situation shots.

magic

                         Sonnet XVII

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way

than this: where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

“poetry is like bread”…. he said.

Selected Poems

Leaves of Grass: “Death-bed” Edition

SONG OF MYSELF
I CELEBRATE MYSELF, AND SING MYSELF,
AND WHAT I ASSUME YOU SHALL  EVERY ATOM BELONGING TO ME AS GOOD BELONGS TO YOU
I LOAFE AND INVITE MY SOUL,
I LEAN AND LOAFE AT MY EASE OBSERVING A SPEAR OF SUMMER GRASS.
MY TOUNGE, EVERY ATOM OF MY BLOOD, FORMED FROM THIS SOIL, THIS AIR,
BORN HERE OF PARENTS BORN HERE OF PARENTS THE SAME, AND THEIR PARENTS THE SAME,
I NOW [23] YEARS OLD IN PERFECT HEALTH BEGIN,
HOPING TO CEASE NOT TILL DEATH.
CREEDS AND SCHOOLS IN ABEYANCE, RETIRING BACK A WHILE SUFFICED AT WHAT THEY ARE, BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN
I HARBOR FOR GOOD OR BAD, I PERMIT TO SPEAK AT EVERY HAZZARD,
NATURE WITHOUT CHECK
WITH ORIGINAL ENERGY
OUT OF THE DIMNESS OPPOSITE EQUALS ADVANCE, ALWAYS SUBSTANCE AND INCREASE, ALWAYS SEX,
ALWAYS A KNIT OF IDENTITY, ALWAYS DISTINCTION, ALWAYS A BREED OF LIFE.
TO ELABORATE IS TO NO AVAIL, LEARNED AND UNLEARNED
FEEL THAT IT IS SO.
I AND THIS MYSTERY –
HERE WE STAND.

~17~
EXPANDING AND SWIFT, HENCEFORTH,
ELEMENTS, BREEDS, ADJUSTMENTS, TURBULENT,
QUICK AND AUDACIOUS,
A WORLD PRIMAL AGAIN…
VISTAS OF GLORY INCESSANT AND BRANCHING,
A NEW RACE DOMINATING PREVIOUS ONES AND GRANDER FAR, WITH NEW CONTESTS,
NEW POLITICS, NEW LITERATURE AND RELIGIONS
NEW INVENTIONS AND ARTS

THESE, MY VOICE ANNOUNCING – I WILL SLEEP NO MORE
BUT ARISE,
YOU OCEANS THAT HAVE BEEN CALM WITHIN ME! I FEELYOU..
FATHOMLESS, STIRRING, PREPARING UNPRECEDENTED WAVES
AND STORMS…
